Each level contains four fiction chapter books, two reference information books and two biographical stories. These student texts deal with relevant and engaging themes such as growing up, relationships, and resolving conflicts. Many of the characters in the stories are 14- or 15-years-old, and provide viewpoints that would be familiar to Knowledge and Employability students. The biographical books tell the stories of young people (one male and one female) and focus on a life situation in which they were involved. The reference books provide background to understand topics that arise in the chapter books and biographies. The look of the readers is modern, action-packed and respectful of Knowledge and Employability students' integrity. The resource includes a number of assessments: a reading placement test, end of selection tests, end of paperback tests, end of theme practice tests, and end of level tests. There are also portfolio tips, ideas, and assignments for students. There is a self-assessment checklist to ensure completion of each component at each level and to mark progress. The teacher's resource includes several items to support teachers in implementing the student texts. The Workout Book uses the first chapter of each paperback as a springboard for discussing reading strategies, word analysis skills, word identification strategies (phonics), and writing forms. The writing forms have excellent prompts that are not elementary in appearance. This resource is applicable to students of all skill levels, styles and experiences, including special needs and ESL students. It is especially relevant to the Knowledge and Employability student. The teacher resource includes many teaching strategies, tips and a classroom management wheel to help the teacher run the program in various ways. This level of the Power up series is accompanied by Extension Library resources consisting of short pocket book size non-fiction readers. Each story includes colour photographs and a glossary with pronunciation help. The stories are also on audiocassette. The teacher resource package includes CD's, theme and strategy posters, and information on implementing the reading program and blackline masters. CAUTIONS/SENSITIVE ISSUES: Some of the stories begin with material that is negative or displays a lack of respect to others; however, in the reading there is always a positive outcome that teaches a moral. For this reason, each story needs to be read in its entirety and followed by discussion. ISBN-10: 0739864025
