1 American Beauty [VHS]

667068530438
United States, Dreamworks Video, 2000, VHS, Very Good

667068530438 Very good condition. American Beauty (VHS) Video By Spacey, Kevin; Bening, Annette; Birch, Thora; Janney, Allison; Gallagher, Peter; Suvari, Mena; Bentley, Wes; Cooper, Chriss; Hall, Conrad L.; Ball, Alan; Mendes, Sam This amazing and impassioned fantasia about American loneliness begins as satire and ends with a vision of the sublime. The defeated suburban patriarch Lester Burnham (Kevin Spacey), condemned by his withdrawn daughter (Thora Birch) and his hyperorganized wife (Annette Bening), drops out of his job and misbehaves badly. After Lester's marriage gets blown apart by squalls of comic contempt, the movie, which was written by Alan Ball and directed by the British theatre maestro Sam Mendes (it's his first film), opens up and takes in Lester's suburban territory-the dissatisfactions of the business-mad nineties, in which the gospel of selfishness leaves people clenched and isolated. The bitter satirical riffs slowly give way to a mystical appreciation of the vagrant beauty trapped beneath the surface of life. The hard-edged, almost hyperreal cinematography, by Conrad L. Hall, and the editing, by Tariq Anwar and Chris Greenbury, shift back and forth between dream and actuality with mesmerizing beauty. With Mena Suvari as a teen vamp who is terrified of being ordinary, and Wes Bentley as a young drug dealer who uses his video camera to discover the hidden connections among things. 2 Fargo

780063869331
United States, Polygram Video, 1997, VHS Video, Very Good

780063869331 Very good conditon. Fargo (VHS) Video By Coen, Joel; Coen, Ethan; McDormand, Frances; Macy, William H.; Buscemi, Steve; Presnell, Harve; Stormare, Peter; Burwell, Carter; Heinrichs, Rick Product Details Leave it to the wildly inventive Coen brothers (Joel directs, Ethan produces, they both write) to concoct a fiendishly clever kidnap caper that's simultaneously a comedy of errors, a Midwestern satire, a taut suspense thriller, and a violent tale of criminal misfortune. It all begins when a hapless car salesman (played to perfection by William H. Macy) ineptly orchestrates the kidnapping of his own wife. The plan goes horribly awry in the hands of bumbling bad guys Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare (one of them being described by a local girl as "kinda funny lookin'" and "not circumcised"), and the pregnant sheriff of Brainerd, Minnesota, (played exquisitely by Frances McDormand in an Oscar-winning role) is suddenly faced with a case of multiple murders. Her investigation is laced with offbeat observations about life in the rural hinterland of Minnesota and North Dakota, and Fargo embraces its local yokels with affectionate humor. At times shocking and hilarious, Fargo is utterly unique and distinctly American, bearing the unmistakable stamp of its inspired creators. Actors: William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, Peter Stormare, Kristin Rudrud, Harve Presnell Directors: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen Format: Closed-captioned, Color, Dolby, NTSC Language: English Number of tapes: 1 Rating Studio: Polygram Video VHS Release Date: March 4, 1997 Theatrical Release Information US Theatrical Release Date: March 8, 1996 MPAA: Rated R for strong violence, language and sexuality. 6305492247 Very good condition. Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels (VHS) Video By Vaughn, Mathew; Ritchie, Guy; Flemying, Jason; Moran, Nick; Statham, Jason; Mackintosh, Steven; Jones, Vinnie; Sting Product Details Cockney boys Tom, Soap, Eddie, and Product Details This debut film from Guy Ritchie, a young English writer and director, was a big hit in Britain, though it's hard to see why. Four London lads owe half a million pounds to a man with the subtle sobriquet of Hatchet Harry. Learning of an upcoming drug theft, they lie in wait and rob the robbers; all goes well until their fence, Nick the Greek (Stephen Marcus), unwittingly tries to sell the drugs back to the very person who owned them in the first place. It's a neat twist in a nicely wrapped plot; if only the rest of his flimsy film lived up to it. Ritchie has previously shot commercials, and he can't begin to shake the habit; he treats the camera as a decorative toy-something you spin around at the first threatening hint of normality. Thank heaven, then, for Vinnie Jones, who plays a debt collector called Big Chris. Jones used to be a soccer player of fearsome repute, and he still stares at other men as if deciding where exactly to kick them. Actors: Jason Flemyng, Dexter Fletcher, Nick Moran, Jason Statham, Steven Mackintosh Directors: Guy Ritchie Writers: Guy Ritchie Producers: Angad Paul, Georgia Masters, Jan Roldanus, Jon Slan, Matthew Vaughn Format: Closed-captioned, Color, Dolby, NTSC Rated: R (Restricted) Number of tapes: 1 Studio: Polygram USA Video VHS Release Date: February 8, 2000 Run Time: 107 minutes

7 U Turn [VHS]

0767805739 / 9780767805735
United States, Sony Pictures, 1999, VHS, Very Good

0767805739 Very good condition. U Turn (VHS) Video By Penn, Sean; Lopez, Jennifer; Nolte, Nick; Thornton, Billy Bob; Phoenix, Joaquin; Danes, Claire; Boothe, Powers; Voight, Jon; Stone, Oliver The first 40 minutes or so are "fun" to a point. Penn is the perfect near-creep to root for, and as he wanders back into town after meeting Grace, the eclectic characters pile up. But soon it gets monotonous, tiring, and just plain ugly. And when incest and bloody fights begin, the fun is gone. If Penn weren't so solid an actor and able to be empathetic in the most morose situations, the movie would be unwatchable at stretches. Lopez makes another good impression, but this is not a performance that stands out. Nolte, raspy and ill-looking, is the Lee Marvin of the '90s. Before U Turn is over, you are already wondering if Oliver Stone will do something else, something more important, soon. Format: VHS ISBN-10:

1573622249 Very good condition. Kids (VHS) Video By Clark, Larry; Fitzpatrick, Leo; Pierce, Justin; Sevigny, Chloe; Wishingrad, Alysa; Poster, Randall; Thompson, Kevin; Druce, Kim; Woods, Cary Larry Clark's film follows some New York City teen-agers through a day and a night of largely self-destructive activity. These kids seem to be wandering in total darkness, and their nihilism outdoes even the celebrated pessimism of Generation X. Although the movie will undoubtedly be received as a wake-up call, a sobering report on a lost generation, it's resolutely neutral on the big social questions. What's fascinating-and unsettling-about the picture is Clark's unmistakable admiration for the recklessness of the young. He's more concerned with the texture of teen-age anomie than with its causes or its consequences, and the obsessive, ardent gaze he turns on his subjects as they stumble toward oblivion has a strangely aestheticizing effect; he can't help turning these wasted, aimless kids into icons of the beautiful and damned. With Leo Fitzpatrick, ChloŽ Sevigny, and Justin Pierce. Screenplay by Harmony Korine (who was nineteen when he wrote it). Format: VHS ISBN-10:

Pictures; Village Roadshow Pictures; NPV Entertainment; Wentraub, Jery; Section Eight Product Details Ocean's Eleven improves on 1960's Rat Pack original with supernova casting, a slickly updated plot, and Steven Soderbergh's graceful touch behind the camera. Soderbergh reportedly relished the opportunity "to make a movie that has no desire except to give pleasure from beginning to end," and he succeeds on those terms, blessed by the casting of George Clooney as Danny Ocean, the title role originated by Frank Sinatra. Fresh out of jail, Ocean masterminds a plot to steal 163 million from the seemingly impervious vault of Las Vegas's Bellagio casino, not just for the money but to win his ex-wife (Julia Roberts) back from the casino's ruthless owner (Andy Garcia). Soderbergh doesn't scrimp on the caper's comically intricate strategy, but he finds greater joy in assembling a stellar team (including Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, and Carl Reiner) and indulging their strengths as actors. The result is a film that's as smooth as a silk suit and just as stylish. 11 The Godfather Part II (VHS) Video

0792101405 Very good condition. The Godfather Part II (VHS) Video By Coppola, Francis Ford; Pacino, Al; Duvall, Robert; Keaton, Diane; Niro, Robert De; Shire, Talia; King, Morgana; Cazale, John; Hill, Mariana; Strasberg, Lee Product Details Francis Ford Coppola took some of the deep background from the life of Mafia chief Vito Corleone the patriarch of Mario Puzo's bestselling novel The Godfather and built around it a stunning sequel to his Oscar winning, 1972 hit film. Robert De Niro plays Vito as a young Sicilian immigrant in turn-of-the-century New York City's Little Italy. Coppola weaves in and out of the story of Vito's transformation into a powerful crime figure, contrasting that evolution against efforts by son Michael Corleone to spread the family's business into pre-Castro Cuba. As memorable as the first film is, The Godfather II is an amazingly intricate, symmetrical tragedy that touches upon several chapters of 20th century history and makes a strong case that our destinies are written long before we're born. This was De Niro's first introduction to a lot of filmgoers, and he makes an enormous impression. But even with him and a number of truly brilliant actors (including maestro Lee Strasberg), this is ultimately Pacino's film and a masterful performance. 0788805045 Very good condition. From Dusk Till Dawn (VHS) Video By Keitel, Harvey; Clooney, George; Tarantiono, Quentin; Lewis, Juliette; Rodriguez, Robert; Hayek, Salma Product Details From a match made in heaven comes a movie spawned in hell! Young hotshot director Robert Rodriquez (El Mariachi, Desperado) teamed up with Pulp Fiction auteur Quentin Tarantino (offering his services as writer and co-star) to make this outrageous, no-holds-barred hybrid of high-octane crime and gruesome horror. QT plays Richard Gecko, a borderline psychopath who breaks his career-criminal brother, Seth (George Clooney), out of prison, after which they rob a bank and leave a trail of dead and wounded in their bloody wake. Then they hijack a mobile home driven by a former Baptist minister (Harvey Keitel) who quit the church after his wife's death and hit the road with his two children (played by Juliette Lewis and Ernest Liu). Heading to Mexico with their hostages, the infamous Gecko brothers arrive at the Titty Twister bar to rendezvous for a money drop, but they don't realize that they've just entered the nocturnal lair of a bloodthirsty gang of vampires! With not-so-subtle aplomb, Rodriguez and Tarantino shift into high gear with a nonstop parade of gore, gunfire, and pointy-fanged mayhem featuring Salma Hayek as a snake-charming dancer whose bite is much worse than her bark. If you're a fan of Tarantino's lyrical dialogue and pop-cultural wit, you'll have fun with the road-movie half of this supernatural horror-comedy, but if your taste runs more to exploding heads and eyeballs, sloppy entrails and morphing monsters, the second half provides a connoisseur's feast of gross-out excess. Bon appetit! Actors: Harvey Keitel, George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino, Juliette Lewis, Ernest Liu Directors: Robert Rodriguez Format: Closed-captioned, Color, Dolby, NTSC Language: English, Spanish Number of tapes: 1 Rating Studio: Walt Disney Video VHS Release Date: October 7, 1997 Run Time: 108 minutes Theatrical Release Information US Theatrical Release Date: January 19, 1996 MPAA: Rated R for strong violence and gore, language and nudity. United States, Touchstone Pictures, 2003, VHS, Very Good

0788844911 Very good condition. 25th Hour (VHS) Video By Norton, Edward; Lee, Spike; Hoffman, Philip Seymour; Dawson, Rosario; Pepper, Barry Product Details thirtyish drug dealer (Edward Norton) who is too smart for his situation gets pinched and sentenced to seven years in prison. His imminent departure produces a crisis in the lives of his best friends, a cynical Wall Street trader (Barry Pepper) and a schlubby private-school teacher (Philip Seymour Hoffman). The movie might be described as a turbulent elegy for the burnt-out hopes of a generation. There's a thriller plot buried in the material, but it's done half-heartedly. The glory of the movie is its talk-the profane New York verve of the three men, suffused with a post-September 11th bitterness. David Benioff adapted his own novel, and Spike Lee directed. Brian Cox plays the hero's father, and Rosario Dawson his girlfriend. Format: VHS ISBN-10:

1562550780 Very good condition. State Of Grace (VHS) Video By Penn, Sean; Harris, Ed; Oldman, Gary; Joanou, Phil; Wright, Robin; Turturro, John; Morricone, Ennio; Simpson, Claire Product Details Overshadowed by GoodFellas when it was released in 1990, State of Grace gradually emerged as one of the best New York gangster films of its decade. It was also the first to feature the Irish American mob known as the Westies. Here, their territory west of Times Square is being gentrified by an unwelcome infusion of yuppie cash, squeezing them into a reluctant alliance with Mafia kingpins. Frankie (Ed Harris) is the boss; little brother Jackie (Gary Oldman) is his volatile muscle; their friend Terry (Sean Penn) has returned from an extended absence, harboring a dangerous secret while rekindling his love for Frankie and Jackie's sister Kathleen (Robin Wright, Penn's future wife). Giving one of his scariest, most violent performances, Oldman offers stark, brutal contrast to Harris's pent-up fury, while Penn breathes life into his character's standard-issue dilemma. A former protege of Steven Spielberg's, director Phil Joanou handles this gritty potboiler with confident, unobtrusive style, ramping up the tension of divided loyalties, even as the plot grows increasingly familiar. 0792899881 Very good condition. 8 Heads In A Duffel Bag (VHS) Video By Pesci, Joe; Krevoy, Brad; Stabler, Steve; Swanson, Kristy; Spade, David; Comeau, Andy; Hamilton, George; Cannon, Dyan; Schulman, Tom Product Details Joe Pesci is a bag man for a mob family. His current contract is to deliver a bag containing the heads of eight rivals. This should be a simple delivery but circumstances force a bag switch. Now Pesci has a bag of clothes while a pre-med student has the heads. To make matters worse, the student has just driven into Mexico with his girlfriend's family. Only one small clue can help Pesci track down his cargo before a contract is taken out on himself. What follows are typically improbable comedy situations that have the heads moving around and being seen by unreliable witnesses while more and more people get involved in trying to straighten out the mess. This gives various characters a chance to develop and show their true mettle. Things begin to get really out of hand but it is successfully tied up at the end with the viewer feeling pretty good about how it all worked out. I expected this to be a darker comedy with plenty of black humor but it really wasn't. Considering the plot device this was a surprisingly happy and upbeat film. Pesci is very good as the bag man but his role is a support role as best (I guess I had also been expecting to see more of him). But although things were not quite as I had thought they would be it was still a very good movie experience. Check it out. 0788812009 Very good condition. Jackie Brown (VHS) Video By Tarantino, Quentin; Grier, Pam; Jackson, Samuel L.; Forster, Robert; Fonda, Bridget; Keaton, Michael; Niro, Robert De Format: VHS Jackie Brown" is a fine addition to Tarantino's oeuvre. Sure, his fingerprints are all over it in some cases, such as his distinctive use of language, and his fondness for shifting time back and forth upon itself to show the same scene from several different perspectives. But it's much more of a grown up movie. True, it's a tad too long. But just a tad. I can take excessive verbosity from Tarantino easier than I can from any other writer/director, because he's always fascinating, always moving, always trying to surprise, and always trying to tell a good story. "Jackie Brown" succeeds on all counts. ISBN-10:

But Pulp Fiction was more than just the follow-up to an impressive first feature, or the winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival, or a script stuffed with the sort of juicy bubblegum dialogue actors just love to chew, or the vehicle that reestablished John Travolta on the A-list, or the relatively low-budget (8 million) independent showcase for an ultrahip mixture of established marquee names and rising stars from the indie scene (among them Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames, Harvey Keitel, Christopher Walken, Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer, Julia Sweeney, Kathy Griffin, and Phil Lamar). It was more, even, than an unprecedented 100 million plus hit for indie distributor Miramax. Pulp Fiction was a sensation. No, it was not the Second Coming (I actually think Reservoir Dogs is a more substantial film; and P.T. Anderson outdid Tarantino in 1997 by making his directorial debut with two even more mature and accomplished pictures, Hard Eight and Boogie Nights). But Pulp Fiction packs so much energy and invention into telling its nonchronologically interwoven short stories (all about temptation, corruption, and redemption amongst modern criminals, large and small) it leaves viewers both exhilarated and exhausted hearts racing and knuckles white from the ride. (Oh, and the infectious, surf-guitar-based soundtrack is tastier than a Royale with Cheese.)
